Cedar Siding Grades
Clear siding is graded for smooth face use with the exception of rustic which is graded for saw textured use only.
Cedar siding grades. Within each of these varieties the cedar is given a letter grade such as d and better or c and better just like in school the higher the letter the better quality it is with a representing the very finest cedar siding. Here is an overview of the characteristics that determine the grades of western red cedar. Cedar is also graded based on appearance which is called appearance grade or select lumber. There are also two other terms under appearance grade cedar.
Knotty siding has warmth and casual charm and is ideal for homes cottages club houses and applications where a rustic appearance is desired. Clear western red cedar. Appearance grades use letters a through d with a being the highest grade. Typically the clear grades are kiln dried to mc15 specifications while knotty grades are normally sold as s dry or green.
Clear and knotty or stk. Appearance grade is primarily for non structural lumber under 2 thick. Clear siding gives premium quality appearance and is ideal for prestigious upmarket applications. Western red cedar siding is available in clear and knotty grades.

Vertical grain means that the growth rings are parallel to each other on the face of the board and the wood is sawn specifically to achieve that look.
